We Are Yellowface
by James Nguyen
“A deep spray tan and two pieces of sticky-tape was once accepted as good method acting. Although declining in popularity, this particular form of sticky-tape-acting continues to survive through traditionalists like Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton and Emma Stone.
More surprising however, is the way that contemporary actors and comedians from various Asian backgrounds continue to be rewarded for reviving the tradition of yellowface, that is, performing minstrelsy on themselves, and oftentimes their mothers.”
We Are Yellowface is the first exhibition from the Loop Video Archive, an on-going research project dedicated to sourcing local moving image works to be projected (sans audio) in the bar nightly. Roughly 4.30pm — 7.00pm
