Following collaborations with Internet Age Media and V&A Museum, Melbourne-based creative lab Pitch Portal are launching their first self-initiated project, Streaming Consciousness — a digital culture experiment displayed through an interactive visual experience, in creative partnership with Twomuch Studio and Nathalie de Valliére.

Half social experiment, half exploratory communication model, Streaming Consciousness presents a time capsule of the innermost thoughts of young people in a digitally-driven world.

To celebrate the launch, Pitch Portal presents an exhibition with interactive art, projections + soundscapes at Loop Project Space.

Over December 2018 and January 2019, 47 young people located globally volunteered to share their ‘streaming’ thoughts in a Slack group, anonymously and without the discourse of likes, favourites or replies. Participants shared confessions, desires, hopes, successes, dreams, existentialism and realisations, inverting their inner monologues in an experience that was both deeply personal, and collaborative.

’We were inspired by mindfulness techniques which encourage free-flowing thoughts’ says Pitch Portal. ‘We wanted to trial an alternative communication style that encouraged this, where sharing our throughs wasn’t centralised in maintaining social identity or encouraging reactions. We think there’s danger in normalising how digital communication has evolved — it’s too powerful a driver of identity and society. We need to leave the space for re-imagination.’

Streaming Consciousness participants and collaborators Twomuch Studio, who are in the process of designing a website in collaboration with Pitch Portal, were intentional in the experience ‘existing as a time capsule’. ‘The design lets the user get an unfiltered and raw look into the thoughts of the participants in a slow, considered and respectful way.’

‘It felt empowering to have this easy-to-use, thematic platform to list down my raw thoughts and revisit them days later to see if thoughts have changed or amplified. I also liked having a pathway to read and digest the thoughts of other strangers — even though there were no direct contacts, swimming in this shared feelings pipeline made me feel connected, listened-to, not alone’ – said one Streaming Consciousness participant.

Streaming Consciousness is the first of an ongoing series of non-commercial experiments hosted by Pitch Portal in collaboration with artists and researchers located globally.

A side arm of the Pitch Studios, Pitch Portal is a female-led creative lab that focuses on experiments and future-thinking. Through commissioned art, research and experiments, they explore cultural shifts, communication and identity construction in a digitally-driven world.

Twomuch Studio is a London based collaborative practice between Benjamin Chan and Malone Chen, specialising in graphic and interaction design, with a digital first approach. They combine tech and design to create playful and visual experiences, resulting in creative and unexpected outcomes.
