SYNTHWAVE / OUTRUN / ITALO / RETRO ELECTRO
Laser Highway returns to host Australia’s premier night dedicated to the very best anything-with-the-word-wave-in-it, italo-disco, outrun, retro electro, 80’s jams, games, and anything else firmly with its roots in synthesizer-based music to keep you grooving into the night! We’ve cultivated a culture that takes inspiration from the 80’s and 90’s, cyberpunk, vaporwave, deep reds/purples/blues and a bunch of sci-fi/action movie tropes into a clash of exploding sound and colour.
Laser Highway is a monthly event featuring an incredible sound system, laser light shows, projection art, cocktail list, a big screen multiplayer game space and a pounding dancefloor to transport you to your retro home away from home. We’ve prided ourselves on creating a radically inclusive alternative club night to give you an experience that’s all about those thumping beats, synthesized basslines, good times and a touch of nostalgia and camaraderie from your past, present and future friends that you haven’t yet met.
In July, as we crest over the winter solstice, we’re bringing the heat and feeling the need for speed. We’re talking blazing sunsets, itchy trigger fingers, winding coastlines, fast cars and even faster men and women. We’ve partnered up with Australia’s most diverse and prolific synthwave export, Sydney-based Jordan F, who will be performing a brand new live set for the Melbourne Laser Highway massive! Rounding out the lineup we have three drivers taking you through a blistering journey via the sounds of italo disco, outrun, retro electro and touch of cyberpunk flavour with one of our stalwart visual artists in tow for full blown synesthesia!
JORDAN F (LIVE)
Jordan F is a producer from Sydney, Australia who makes 80’s electronic music with a modern fidelity. Starting out at the beginning of the second wave of dreamwave artists (the scene that had just come off MySpace) he was picked up by Rosso Corsa Records (home to Mitch Murder, Lazerhawk and Miami Nights 1984).
After flexing his musical muscles on numerous remixes and an EP, his debut album ‘Slipstream’ was finally released in 2014. This was followed up in quick succession with the release of his sophomore album ‘Timelines’ in 2016. Both releases strengthened Jordan’s reputation as a producer with a knack for retro flair without the constructions of genre.
2017 saw his music featured in the Netflix psychological thriller ‘Death Note’, while also releasing a collaboration EP with Sydney duo Vast Hill. In the wake of 2018 he released his third full length album ‘Oblivion’ – an adventure into spacey, ominous sounds and Lovecraftian horror.
His commitment to the long form, where a pallet of sounds, styles and textures are explored to their fullest extent, has made for some of the most enjoyable synth LPs of recent years.
Gigavolt has been producing and mixing synth wave, outrun, and electro since 2008. Most recognisable from the wearable tech he wears to Laser Highway, his sound fuses the 80’s neon future with classic cyberpunk themes, always with a heavy beat and lots of drama.
If you know your Italo-disco, you would know George Hysteric. Famed for his vast vinyl collection of ’80s synthpop and disco obscurities, the Melbourne-based DJ has made crowds clamour on the dancefloors across Rotterdam, London, Vienna and beach parties in Italy.
Hysteric is also the man behind the Italo-disco label, Mothball Record. It’s themed CD mixes such as “Italo Estate” and the “Lost Treasures of Italo-disco” series, along with the infamous “Hot Girls of Italo-disco” and “Mothball Dance Classics” vinyl EPs (joining with Dutch label Bordello A Parigi) have now become highly sought-after rarities, having acquainted synth lovers with slamming Italo-disco gems that have remained unplayed since the early 1980s.
Zerotonine is the host, resident DJ and runs Australia’s first and only monthly club night dedicated to synthwave, outrun and retro electro: Laser Highway in Melbourne. As a labour of love, he is dedicated to providing a unique experience for music makers and fans alike. He is also the co-host of www.kissfm.com.au‘s (87.6 in Melbourne) Retro Electro Show from 2pm Wednesdays AEST.
A veteran DJ and creator for over a decade playing too many genres internationally and at home in Australia, he is in love with arpeggio basslines, warm synths, and driving drums; his style is inspired by 80’s movies, the Lamborghini Countach, boss fights, neon vectors, keytars, androids, reverb guitars, gated drums, cosmic phenomena, bleeps and bloops. Expect a range of sonic styles to get your feet stomping and head rocking from all corners of the retro-verse.
