SYNTHWAVE / OUTRUN / RETRO ELECTRO
Laser Highway returns to host Australia’s premier night dedicated to the very best anything-with-the-word-wave-in-it, italo-disco, outrun, retro electro, 80’s jams, games, and anything else firmly with its roots in synthesizer-based music to keep you grooving into the night! We’ve cultivated a culture that takes inspiration from the 80’s and 90’s, cyberpunk, vaporwave, deep reds/purples/blues and a bunch of sci-fi/action movie tropes into a clash of exploding sound and colour.
Laser Highway is a monthly event featuring an incredible sound system, laser light shows, projection art, cocktail list, a big screen multiplayer game space and a pounding dancefloor to transport you to your retro home away from home. We’ve prided ourselves on creating a radically inclusive alternative club night to give you an experience that’s all about those thumping beats, synthesized basslines, good times and a touch of nostalgia and camaraderie from your past, present and future friends that you haven’t yet met.
This May, we present to you one of our biggest shows ever featuring two outstanding interstate acts supported by some of the most unique local talent around that is sure to be a feast for all your senses!
DISKODISCO (QLD – LIVE)
DiskoDisco—best known as the, “I play cello,” guy from ‘High
School Musical’—was arrested in 2008 for trying to rob a pizza
place. He hasn’t acted in anything since 2007 and subsequently
tried his hand at synthwave production.
Returning to the scene, DiskoDisco was unaware of the change,
instead producing sounds of a bygone era. Utilising synthesisers
and drum machines in a new and remarkable fashion that recalls a
bad ‘80s movie you can’t look away from.
MACHINE CLUB (QLD – DJ SET)
After making his first public appearance at BIGSOUND 2017, and
following it up with two more live performances later that year,
Machine Club is ready and willing to show the world what he’s
made of. Eschewing a daring mix of post-punk and heavy
electronica, Machine Club spurs a new shift in primal electricity.
Machine Club is the culmination of blood, sweat and tears, both
shed and gained, from years of other musical groups and DJ outfits.
Imposing a stratagem of music diversification, Machine Club is
music you can dance to with a razor sharp edge.
GRYFF (DEX, DRUMS AND SYNTHS)
Listening to Melbourne-via-Perth multi-talent Gryff is like sipping the perfect cocktail – it’s refreshing, it goes down smoothly but it still packs a punch. Transporting listeners to a 1970’s Miami wonderland, Gryff melts vivid, synth-drenched indie-pop with soaring vocal delivery.
Having shared the stage with the likes of Teischa , Slum Sociable and Tired Lion, Gryff’s live band saturates audiences in energy, electricity and summer.
Tessel is a DJ and designer inspired by all things Outrun, Cyberpunk, fast cars and outer space. He’ll bring an eclectic mix of old and new Outrun to the mixtable, crank some pounding beats and trippy soundscapes.
ZEROTONINE (PENDING CYBERNETIC WRIST REPLACEMENT)
Zerotonine is the host, resident DJ and runs Australia’s first and only monthly club night dedicated to synthwave, outrun and retro electro: Laser Highway in Melbourne. As a labour of love, he is dedicated to providing a unique experience for music makers and fans alike. He is also the co-host of www.kissfm.com.au‘s (87.6 in Melbourne) Retro Electro Show from 2pm Wednesdays AEST.
A veteran DJ and creator for over a decade playing too many genres internationally and at home in Australia, he is in love with arpeggio basslines, warm synths, and driving drums; his style is inspired by 80’s movies, the Lamborghini Countach, boss fights, neon vectors, keytars, androids, reverb guitars, gated drums, cosmic phenomena, bleeps and bloops. Expect a range of sonic styles to get your feet stomping and head rocking from all corners of the retro-verse.
