Banned in the US and heavily censored in other countries upon its release in 1922, Benjamin Christensen’s hybrid doco-fiction horror Häxan is a subversive gem of the silent era that still feels wildly ahead of its time.

Partly based on a 15th-century German guide for inquisitors, the film explores witchcraft’s history from the middle ages onward, tackling how superstition & confusion around physical and mental illness became historically entwined with fear of female power and the unknown.

From 7 – 9pm at Loop bar, with a brief introduction prior to the screening.
