Coming Out Like a Porn Star is an anthology of essays about pornography, protection and privacy. Edited by prominent genderqueer porn performer and producer Jiz Lee, the book brings together writing from porn industry professionals on their own experiences being out about their work.
Does your mother know? What does your family think? Has your being in porn effected dating? These top the most commonly asked questions of those in the adult industry. Coming Out Like a Porn Star presents over 50 first-hand accounts, ranging from funny to fucked up, as well as practical tips and personal anecdotes. While some denounce pornography as immoral and others praise its sex-positive liberation, the ways performers “come out” about doing porn — or the great lengths we take to avoid it — is an honest, nuanced depiction of how society views those at the public frontline of sexuality.
COLAPS features writing by several Australian porn producers, including Zahra Stardust, Gala Vanting, and Louise Lush. They are featured in the excellent company of such porn powerhouses as Annie Sprinkle, Stoya, Nina Hartley, and 45 other writers. The book is candid, heartfelt, and an important piece of sex-worker generated media dedicated to addressing the stigma that sex industry professionals face in their daily lives.
To celebrate the release of the book in Australia and to continue the complex dialogue it presents, Coming Out Like a Porn Star will launch in Melbourne on the 17th of November with a reading, panel discussion and book signing involving several local performers and producers. Facilitated by UNSW Ph.D candidate and queer feminist porn performer and producer Zahra Stardust, the panel will delve into the complexities of being ‘out’ as sex industry professionals in our various intersectional identities, and how that affects the way we work, relate, advocate, and live our daily lives.
